Ben,
Thanks for the e-mail, this news is very encouraging. I assume by your
response that you are either the 'Pioneer' node or live in Heptonstall.
In response to your questions I'm sure the members of the wireless group
can help, after all that is why we are establishing ourselves as a group
- to help each other.
Rob Currey recently visited my house and installed Linux on my test
machine in preparation for it to run as a headless node. A little more
needs to be done, including the installation of a PCMCIA card and aerial
(when I get round to buying one). Rob gave some encouraging feedback on
my location and was optimistic that I might reach the houses at the top
of Heptonstall, this is subject to some testing as I mentioned in my
e-mail.
May I suggest you hook up with the group? There is a proposed wireless
PC 'building' & 'gaming' event scheduled for the 12th July at the lava
lounge in Hebden. However, if you would like to meet up with me or one
of the others before then to discuss options then I would be happy to
meet you in the local (pub in Heptonstall or the New Delight in Colden,
or the White Lion in Hebden) and I'm sure extending the invitation to
the others would see more joining in before the next 'organised' event.
Give me a call on 07771863427 or 01422846232 if you would like to chat
about this. Certainly you might be the nearest 'hope' I have to
connecting into a mesh, so I am very interested to find out where you
are.
Cheers Simon

I've not really raised my head in the forum as I don't have a great deal
to offer ATM but I thought I would just let you know where I stand. I am
hoping to get ADSL at some point although this depends on A. BT's
provision of the service and B. whether my employer will pay for it ;-)
.
I imagine I'll have it in place by the end of the year ish. And when I
do
I'll be getting wireless so that I can use my laptop around the house.
Will the range be sufficient to reach you? Will we not need someone else
at the top of heptonstall or slack bottom?
We use wireless at work routed through a Linux box and I'll be looking
to
do something similar although I will need to load up a brain dump from
the
colleague who manages it since I'm not too hot on that kind of stuff
ATM.
I'll let you know if I get any closer to being connected.
