I concur.
Let's encourage participation, creativity and co-operation. The
community will 'openly' express its ideas; transparency is needed to
allow the 'community' to share in and explore those ideas. This will
enable informed decision making and facilitate progress.
A diverse community as ours is, will seek support from a variety of
'groups' to move forward. We may not yet see a symbiosis but I agree
there should and will be complimentary relationships.
For example, I live in Colden but I might be too far from the exchange
to get an ADSL connection. Obviously this will be subject to a site
survey. Whilst I maintain that an ADSL connection is something I am
keen to obtain, I am also exploring the wireless possibilities. The
wireless route will be subject to some rigorous testing and a dependency
on more people participating locally (or within LoS). A plausible
scenario might be that I connect to a node in Heptonstall (Pioneer?)
using wireless and jump onwards down into Hebden, to then break out onto
an ADSL backbone. So I need both groups to support me. There is the
potential then for me to support others around me in Colden and beyond,
who knows.
One thing I am clear on to date however is my need to communicate openly
with people who can help me. This is not purely self serving as I can
share with others and encourage growth. To do this however I need a
communications vehicle appropriate to any number of requirements I might
have. This can change according to situation, using e-mail, IRC, MSN,
Newsgroups, Guestbook's and so on. The means of delivery is not an end
in itself, rather the purpose for using that means. So, when we do get
there and have people 'connected' I trust we will remember that it is in
providing access to a freely used space which is the common goal. It is
shortsighted to censor anything now.

This is with regard to the Global Valley Community Cooperative ISP.
Hopefully a project which is moulded by the people that will use it,
rather than the like it or lump it of national suppliers (BT, Freeserve
etc.) At HebWeb we have a forum that this moulding process might take
place.
I have been made aware that the digital forum at hebweb is somewhat
judicious in what it posts to the website. Chris Radcliffe of HebWeb is
on this list, let me acknowledge it is an understandable policy.
Any posting mentioning an alternative form of communication to HebWeb's
forum I believe, is not posted. I.E. the internet relay chat room
#DigitalHebden is not mentioned, neither was a suggestion for a yahoo
groups mailing list for GVCC (communications different in style and
delivery to a moderated forum.)
Can we gently cajole and reassure Chris that a transparent policy would
be more in the net ethos. I would respect a policy of not publishing
anything that in the editors opinion undermines HebWeb's role as a Hub,
*if* it was stated and we can see that the postings have an editorial
slant.
What have people seen work well in a moderated forum? I have seen
postings edited and omitted but with it obvious this has been done.
Post comments to the wireless group not to Chris (who is in the
wireless list), ta.
Robert
For those people in addition to the wireless group I have addressed:
the wireless group have complementary ambitions to GVCC, to join the
wireless discussion:
