I had a meeting with the managing director of PopTel about a week or so
before they launched MyZones.
I'd agree with some of your criticisms (above), and I think they make far
too much of their voucher system (I suspect because it is the most easily
protected patent of their plan). However, they do have a working address
space and security model, which is not to be sniffed at.
I suspect a MyZones based community network would grow faster than a loose
ad hoc attempt - but then I think a tighter, centrally-managed community
effort might offer significant benefits over their design...
