Bristol are having a similar event, on the day original planned for Hebden
Bridge, this is their current thinking on their day ...

Either the list has gone very quiet or I've accidentally unsubscribed
myself, but here goes.

(actually it turns out I had unsubscribed myself! LOL, hope I haven't
missed anything.)

Bit of a poor turn out for the first Bristol Wireless cybermeet, and I
appear to have lost the irc log, not that there was much discussed.

I'm assuming as there has been no particular objections raised, that
everyone is in favour of this Bristol Wireless Event at the Community
centre. However we would prefer it if the usual suspects weren't left to
do all the organising themselves again, we don't want a debacle like
TechSW.

The "fest" then is 3 weeks next Saturday, July 12th; for Joe and
Josephine Public the doors open at 10 and close at 4, for the rest of us
I suspect it will be a slightly longer day.

Ideas mooted so far are -

*giving away free computers

we need to set some ground rules and criteria as to who can have them.
But at a minimum I think they should have to install the OS on the
premises on the day (with our support of course)

Currently we have 25 Dell Optiplexs (233/333mhz) all with 17" Monitors
and kb and mice kindly donated by the Institute of Physics Publishing
(thanks Rupert). Personally i'd like to double that amount so if anyone
has any ideas who we might approach please post them to the list. If you
don't want to do it yourself I'm happy to.

*wirelessly enabling and linking to the network any local peoples
computers who are within range of a wireless signal

Ideally this would be done for free, but practically we will have to
find a supplier who will do a deal on sale or return kit, and make a
"cost of kit only" charge to the lucky ones.

I found a guy in Chester who would do sale or return on netgear MA311's
but we'd prefer someone local and present with a whole range of kit,
including cantennas(?)

Also Matt + Richard have suggested we should do a range test around the
area and draw a map of potential connectivity

*usual "fest" events like installing OS on peoples machines that they
bring along, pc clinics - "the problem with this machine is that it's
running windows" :) etc.

* also wireless internet cafe in the foyer and possible network gaming
sessions

Things we need to do -

Publicity - locally, city wide and nationally

Leaflet, page on website, press release, spam :)

look for additional help from other interested parties, particularly
BBLUG and maybe underscore

Organise security, insurance(?) and maybe catering as there is not a lot
of nearby local eating establishments.

Decide on a budget ( we've already spent over =A3100) and how it will be
raised.

All in all we need to have a meeting where more people turn up! and more
people commit to specific jobs!

As the only place we seem to be able to get a crowd is the Chelsea, i'm
going to tentatively suggest a meeting for Thursday evening 7 to 9 OR
Sunday (same time), we've got connectivity so people would be welcome to
join us from irc and fully participate - should be fun.
